The Definition of Podiatric Medicine | Member Area Access
The American Association for Women Podiatrists, Inc. (AAWP) is a national organization providing leadership to our members in the advancement of educational, political, financial, social, and emotional well-being. Our membership includes women podiatrists from coast to coast and throughout Canada. We are daughters, mothers and most importantly, we are Podiatric Physicians -- and WE CARE. We care about the ongoing foot health of our patients, and we care about the well being of our members.
With the cooperation of other medical practitioners, colleges and universities, businesses and corporations, and concerned citizens, we serve as the single source for women’s podiatric medicine education and information throughout the United States and Canada. We also serve as a communication channel and reliable support network for our member body, providing a forum to address the unique needs, concerns, and issues related to women’s foot health, women podiatrists, and women’s podiatric medicine in general. |

Podiatric medicine is concerned with diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the human foot and ankle, along with structures of the leg that can influence the foot and ankle.
The preparatory education of most Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPMs) includes four years of undergraduate work, followed by four years in an accredited podiatric medical school, followed by a hospital-based residency. DPMs are licensed in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
As with all medical specialists, including podiatric physicians, the scope of medical and surgical patient care must be consistent with the individual doctor’s education, training, and experience. |
 |
In addition to private practice, podiatrists serve on the staffs of hospitals and long-term care facilities, on the faculties of schools of medicine, as commissioned officers in the Armed Forces, the US Public Health Service, in the Department of Veterans Affairs, and in municipal health departments. Many podiatrists today are also members of group medical practices.
The American Association for Women Podiatrists is a related organization of the American Podiatric Medical Association, the premier professional organization representing the nation’s podiatrists. |
