2009 Women’s Scholarship Winners

Congratulations to our 2009 AAWP women’s scholarship winners! With so many talented students of podiatric medicine submitting applications this year, the field was truly tough to decide upon for the board of the American Association for Women Podiatrists. But these five women’s scholarship winners have clearly demonstrated why they are winners. These soon-to-be podiatric physicians will surely leave their mark on foot health as the talented podiatrist each of them will no doubt become.

2009 AAWP Founder’s Scholarship Recipients:

Deborah Rosenfeld
Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine
As the president of the TUSPM student chapter of AAWP, Deborah organized mentoring opportunities for members by inviting female podiatrists to speak to the group on a monthly basis. Their group volunteered at the annual Food and Health Expo in Philadelphia and organized clothing donation to a local women’s shelter.

Kara Krejci
Des Moines University School of Podiatric Medicine
As president of the CPMS student chapter of AAWP, Kara organized multiple sessions of self defense training class. She helped plan a senior health fair at DMU in coordination with other group presidents, and put together volunteer opportunities at a senior residence home.

Michele Bertelle
Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine
As secretary of the Barry student chapter of AAWP, Michelle helped set up an event known as “The View”. This featured a panel of female podiatrists coming together to discuss the challenges of their work and lives. She also served as FPMSA secretary and class secretary during her time at Barry. This past year she served as AAWP Parliamentarian.

Maryellen Brucato
Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine
As a second year student, Maryellen served as the vice-president of the AAWP student chapter and organized a “Toys for Tots” drive. She also created “Staff Appreciation Day”, where thank you cards and flowers were distributed to the support staff. As president of her student chapter during this past year, Maryellen started a new graduation award for two fourth year female students and coordinated salsa dance lessons to raise funds to support the awards.

Hilary Smith
Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine
As president of the Scholl College chapter of AAWP, Hilary coordinated lectures by practicing podiatrists and office visits to clinics and private practices. She organized a school wide holiday party and a suture material fundraiser, the proceeds of which were donated to “Dance for Diabetes” and the Lake County Arthritis Walk. She also coordinated student volunteers for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer (2 days and 39 miles) in Chicago.
